For the people of Tela Honduras the world is brightly colored, hot & humid, bounded by the Caribbean and the Pacific Oceans and not without many challenges. The economy struggles along with the people but there is both hope and help.
Shops by the beach or downtown are always clean, inviting and painted with the rainbow in mind.
In February of every year, since 2003, a group of volunteers from the Rotary of Charlotte-Shelburne Vermont, come to Tela to provide a wide range of services and to distribute carloads of donated goods...baby strollers, dentists chairs, police equipment, clothes, medical supplies, school supplies, toiletries; things for nursing homes, things for nursaries, things for play; things for work. They build schools from the ground up, a beautiful and fully equipped physical therapy center, day care centers, kindergartens and this year they built a playground.
This is the BEFORE.
These are some of the parts.
And these are the highly excited users! By the time I left the playground was not completed (it is now!) so an AFTER shot will have to wait until...well...after.
"Hands To Honduras" is the name of the Vermont Rotary project in Tela. This shows a tiny bit of what they bring down or unpack from the container car when they arrive. It's all distributed by they time their two weeks is up each year.
Volunteer doctors, nurses and dentists patiently see patients all day long wherever a room or a tent is available. And the people come in droves!
They fix up school facilities and classrooms and build extensions. They make the rebar, prepare the bricks and mortar and do all the painting. They hire local contractors for all work that the local folks can handle.
On the outskirts of Tela and along the shore are villages where some live in hand-made huts.
And the children are the focal point for family life. They are bright and spirited and forever sparkling. Somehow, even though many of the streets are dusty, the children in Tela are almost magically clean and always, always expressive and interesting!
